Emily Ocker’s Circular Cast-On is my FAVORITE method to use for center-out projects like Pi shawls and hats. It is also called “Pinhole Cast-On” because where you start the project becomes almost invisible and only leaves a tiny pinhole! I love using this circular cast-on technique, so you will see this technique in my Easter Egg, wine cozie, mason jar cover, and more.
You will need a crochet hook for this cast on. Even though you haven’t learned how to crochet, don’t be intimidated! I promise you, it is pretty easy!
How to knit Emily Ocker’s Circular Cast On?
It is probably easier to watch the video than read through the instructions with pictures.
Here is the tutorial video 👇👇 (youtube video 853 x 480)
Following is a brief direction with some pictures.
1: Wrap the yarn around two fingers twice
2. Using a crochet hook, insert the hook under the first line, then grab the second line with the hook and pull. It will create a little loop around the hook.
3. Hold/pinch the bottom of the crochet hook/the loop you just made so that the tail won’t move around.
4. Wrap the working yarn around the hook.
5. Pull the working yarn through the loop.
You made the first stitch! Let’s make another!
6. Put the hook through the big loop.
7. Wrap the working yarn around the hook to grab the yarn
8. Pull the yarn through the big loop. You just made a new loop around the hook.
9. Wrap the working yarn around the hook.
10. Pull the working yarn through the new loop you just made.
Repeat 6-10 to make more stitches.
What to do after finishing Cast On?
Transfer stitches evenly onto either Double Pointed Needles or Circular Needles to use Magic Loop Method. Pull the tail to tighten the loop to make the hole disappear! Then start working on the pattern.
