About the Design
Last year, I wanted something quick and easier for my hand-knitted product for the holiday season (because knitting one thing takes forever, and it is hard to keep up with when you are selling hand-knitted items!). While I was gathering ideas and inspiration, my friend suggested a collaboration with her business. She is the owner of Four Maples Vinyard and Winery in Champlain, NY. These are some pictures that I took a few days ago while visiting her.
When she mentioned collaboration, I thought of stemless wine glass koozie. My first attempt came out OK. It was only knitted, so the fabric felt thin and stretchy. I wasn’t really excited to see how it turned out. Honestly, I almost ditched the idea. But when I saw felted slippers, I thought, why not felt the koozie to make it thicker and sturdier? And that was the best idea ever! It came out so pretty and turned out to be one of the best-selling products as a Christmas gift. I bet your wine-loving friend and family would love this koozie as a gift too.
Skills needed for this knitting pattern
The pattern is advanced beginner level. I used Emily Ocker’s Circular Cast On and Magic Loop Method to start the bottom part of the koozie. You need to know how to KFB (Knit Front and Back), SKP (Slip, Knit, Pass) for the increase and decrease to shape the body. The rim is made by using three stitch I-cord bind off. Then felted by hand (if you prefer machine felting, go ahead and use the machine).
If you’ve never done felting, it might be intimidating. But I promise you, it is so easy and fun! Since it is such a small project, it would be a great first felting project to experiment with.

Yarn Used
I used Wool of the Andes Worsted from Knitpicks/We Crochet (they are the same company). I love this yarn, especially for felting. There are various colors, and you can see the different hues when you felt them. The price is really reasonable too. Be careful not to purchase “superwash” yarn in order to felt in the end.

Materials
- Size E/4 (3.5mm) or similar-sized Crochet Hook for cast on.
- US 10 (6mm) Knitting Needles (32″ or the length that you prefer for the magic loop method). Or Four US 10 (6mm) Double Pointed Needles.
- 100% wool worsted weight yarn (Be careful NOT to get superwash yarn). Approximately 45 – 65 yards.
- Darning Needle
Gauge and Finished Measurement
- 4″ x 4″ =16 sts x 25 rows
- Fits the majority of 15oz stemless wine glasses. The picture shown is 2″ in diameter on the bottom. 11″ in circumference where it is the widest and 4.5″ tall.

Kfb– Knit into the Front and Back of the same stitch

Main Pattern
CO 4 sts using Emily Ocker’s Circular CO method using a crochet hook. Transfer stitches evenly onto knitting needles and knit in the round using the magic loop method or DPNs.
Increase stitches
Round 1: Kfb to the end.
Round 2: *Kfb, K1; repeat from* to the end.
Round 3: *Kfb, K2; repeat from* to the end.
Round 4: *Kfb, K3; repeat from* to the end.
Work in the same manner to increase 4 stitches each row until you reach round 16: *Kfb, K15; repeat from* to the end. (68 sts total)
Knit 2 rounds.
Decrease stitches
Round 1: *SKP, K15; repeat from* to the end.
Round 2, 3, and 4: Knit.
Round 5: *SKP, K14; repeat from* to the end.
Round 6, 7, 8: Knit.
Round 9: *SKP, K13; repeat from* to the end.
Round 10 and 11: Knit.
Round 12: *SKP, K12; repeat from* to the end.
Round 13 and 14: Knit
Round 15: *SKP, K11; repeat from* to the end (48 sts).
Round 16 and 17: Knit
BO using 3 stitch I-cord BO. Cut the yarn and weave in the ends.

Felting
Fill a bowl with hot water, which is not boiling but the hottest temperature you can handle to dip your hands in. I usually use house cleaning gloves for this process. Please be very careful not to burn your hands.
Add a drop of mild dish soap. Soak your knitted wine glass koozie in the water and agitate. Once it is saturated, take it out of the water, roll between the palms of your hands, then dip it back in the water. Repeat this process for 5-10 minutes. Make sure to roll from different angles. It will start to feel stretchy and loose for the first couple of minutes, but keep going. You will feel it shrink and get thicker as you repeat. Once it is felted, put it on the wine glass to test how it fits. If it is too loose, put it back in hot water and repeat the felting process until it reaches the desired size. When it is done, lay it flat between a folded bath towel (fold a few times so you have several layers of towel). Gently push it down to get excess water out. Repeat this process a few times while changing to a dry area of the towel each time. Put the Koozie on the glass, adjust the shape, and let it air dry.
Once it is dry, you can add a little touch. I used customized leather labels from Local Laser Co. on Etsy and Ryelyn by Design.
